mastering - a fresh perspective and pair of ears combined with excellent gear to make the songs sound their absolute best.
the why and the what - over days and months of writing, recording, and mixing ears can be tuned into to certain things that have been brought out within that process, and it becomes difficult to hear the songs, or album as a whole piece. it is the mastering engineer who takes those multiple listening environments, ideas, and sounds, and ensures they sound great for all listeners. the sound will be optimized for any listening environment be it car stereo, ipod, or high end stereo systems. with a mixture of eq, compression and dynamics processing the final result is a warmer, louder, richer, fuller and punchier songs. gear - essential mastering converters: pacific microsonics model two (x2) burl audio a/d burl audio d/a mytek 8x192 series ad/da analog processing: elysia alpha compressor api 5500 eq tape: atr 102 with either 1/4" or 1/2" heads atr 104 1" two track machine with custom tim de paravacini (ear) electronics digital processing: weiss eq1 workstation: sequoia running on a mac pro quad core lynx aes 16 pcie card tascam dvra1000 recorder plugins/software: cube-tec mastering magix drumagog bfd guitar rig altiverb and many others monitoring: barefoot mastering stack room setup by bob hodas rate - all sessions: attended or unattended all digital master $500 analog chain master $700 analog chain to tape master $900 singles 3-7 min $100 $135 per hour for any additonal changes. an album typically takes around 6 hours to complete. for unattended sessions you will receive a reference track to check levels, eq etc. prior to working on the whole album. upon completion of the work you will receive a reference master cd to check the spacing and overall integrity of the work, followed by an actual pre-master cd or ddp file. it is also possible to send the completed songs to you over the internet if you wish. the actual master: can include upc/isrc number, cd-text encoding, and can be in either redbook cd-r or ddp-image formats. enhanced cds are also possible, as well as mp3 encoding. cd reference disc: first ref cd-r for approval of mastering, spacing, and fades is free. $10 each for any additional reference cd-rs. clients - weather pending and how!

history - i’ve been working in mastering since i first started producing music. having begun working in recording studios directly after high school, i began my formal training studying electronic music at univesity of california, santa cruz. since 2006 i’ve been studying the art of mastering under the great mastering engineers paul stubblebine, michael romanowski, and john greenham and am now working with them at historic 1340 mission st sf ca. The studio originally called Coast Recorders was built by Mercury Records in 1969, and redesigned by bill putnam in 1971. i’m interested in making your music sound as enjoyable and musical as possible, not as loud as possible. from being an artist, engineer, producer, and live sound engineer, to working within a record label I understand where you’re coming from and how important your project is to you. i look at every album as a unique opportunity and an honor to be trusted with your music. ![]() |
